“It’s chaotic, it’s messy, but the gospel is being preached, people are worshipping God, and we are a community” – Chris Yu
“We’re encountering a generation that has no Christian background. This is a great opportunity but also a huge challenge,” says Chris Yu [MDiv Youth and Family Ministry 2004]. Mercy City Church is a church plant that started with exegeting a disadvantaged inner city neighborhood. At the beginning no flyers were sent out, there was no Sunday service, and no offering was taken up. “We didn’t want to establish ourselves as a Sunday church. In a community as tight knit as ours that wouldn’t be enough,” says Chris. “We forced ourselves to build relationships every day.” Two years into the program, the community came to Chris and requested a Sunday service.
Today close to 70 people attend the service, and the doors are open all week for people to visit, pray or print their homework or resume. There are also over 30 children attending the after school program.
“It’s chaotic, it’s messy, but the gospel is being preached, people are worshipping God, and we are a community,” says Chris. “We’ve seen people go from indifference towards God to actually coming to Christ.”
