“I can see a difference in our kids – whether it’s their attitude, their social behaviors, or academics, and then ultimately you see a difference spiritually” – Shawn James
A boy living in Toronto Community Housing feels the weight of violence, drugs and poverty in his community. His single mother enrolls him in an after-school program that supports at-risk children and their families. Christian leaders tutor him in his schoolwork, help him complete his first job application and support him as he pursues college. Now a working adult, he drops his own son off where the same Community Director is there to welcome the next generation.
This model of journeying alongside children over the long term inspires Shawn James [BA Health & Human Services – Social Service Work 2004] in his role of Community Director at UrbanPromise. He supports children and their families in all areas of life and has journeyed with some of the children in the program for over a decade.
“I can see a difference in our kids – whether it’s their attitude, their social behaviors, or academics, and then ultimately you see a difference spiritually,” says Shawn. “Many youth come to know Jesus, get baptized and plug into a church.”
